Staff Sgt. Justin E. Schmalstieg, 28, of Pittsburgh, Pa., died Dec. 15 while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 1st Explosive Ordnance Disposal Company, 7th Engineer Support Battalion, 1st Marine Logistics Group, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif. Beloved husband of Ann C. (Schneider) Schmalstieg; son of John M. and Deborah L. Gilkey; brother of John M. Gilkey, Jr.; grandson of Sandra and Edward Schmalstieg and Dorothy and Charles Gilkey; son-in-law of Marty and Margaret Schneider; brother-in-law and best friend of Joseph Schneider (Casey) and John Schneider (Lindsey) and Irene Schneider. Justin was a dedicated Marine for the past 9 years, serving three tours of duty in Iraq and one in Afghanistan as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technician. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
