Ira Foster was an interesting man. He had a really varied career as school teacher, merchant, lawyer, doctor, state representative, and the Quartermaster General for Georgia during the Civil War.

He settled his family on "Georgia Mountain" in Marshall County, Alabama after the Civil War and lived there until his wife died. He remarried and moved to Gadsden.

Gen Ira R. Foster died at Gadsden, Ala., Nov. 19. He had reached the age of 78, and leaves a wife and four children. Gen. Foster was well known here and esteemed by all. He was a prominent Baptist and Mason, and it is said of him that a truer friend or better man in every respect never lived.
