Amos was a sailor and ship captain who sailed from Searsport (Waldo County) Maine as recorded in Searsport Sea Captains (1960), p. 82. According to this source, he sailed on the following ships: the schooner F.A. Heath (1849), the bark Moonbeam (1859), the brig Clytie (1882), the schooner Martha Sargent, and the brigs Model and the Benjamin Carver.

According to The Book of Dow, by Robert Piercy Dow (1929), p. 71 and also Searsport Sea Captains (1960), p. 82, Amos drowned at sea in October, 1882 in the Cuban port of Caibarien when the ship he was commanding, the brig Clytie, capsized. Amos was buried in the Evergreen Cemetery in North Searsport (Waldo County) Maine.
