Last Rites for Former Resident Held Sunday
Pioneer Mother Dies in Frazee Rest Home After Long Illness

Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon, August 12 from the Scherkenbach Funeral Home for Mrs. Matilda VanDeventer, former resident of North German township, who passed away Friday a the rest home in Frazee where she lived recently. The Rev. R. H. Mercer, pastor of the Methodist Church officiated at the last rites. Mrs. Ernest VanDeventer of St. Paul sang "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere", "We Shall Gather At the River" and "In The Garden". Mrs. Ralph Stephens was at the organ.
Serving as bearers were Ernest VanDeventer of St. Paul, Rodney VanDeventer of Duluth, William J. Stark of Duluth, Homer Carson and Arthur Reilly of Nimrod and James Snee of rural Wadena. Interment was in the Sebeka cemetery beside the remains of her husband.
Matilda Louise VanDeventer was born Nov. 23, 1863 at Spirit Lake, Iowa, the daughter of Mrs. and Mrs. William Young. She was married March 5, 1883 to Amasa R. VanDeventer in Illinois. They lived on a farm east of Blue Grass until his death on Dec. 16, 1947. She has since lived at the rest home in Wadena and more recently at the rest home in Frazee.
Surviving are two sons and two daughters, Ernest R. VanDeventer of Gassville, Arkansas, Mrs. Ed Grossnickel (Amy) of Route 4, Menehga, Mrs. Ethel Dingman of Webster City, Iowa and Jacob E. VanDeventer of Duluth. There are 42 grandchildren, 69 great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. Three daughters and a son preceded their mother in death. Willard Young, a brother lives at Boone Iowa and two sisters, Luella Burrell and Deatev Wandenburg of Illinois.
