Son of John and Ann (Whitworth) Greathead of Rochdale, Lancashire, England. He was one of six children; Thomas (died young) Benjamin, Hannah, Sarah Ann, Thomas (1836-1909), and Margaret. According to his Mass death record, Thomas (1836-1909) died of an accidental drowning.
