Morris E. (Ed) Satterfield, 82, died Friday in Liberty Village.
Mr. Satterfield, who was a 1934 graduate of Central High School, earned a bachelor's degree in education from Ball State University in 1955 and a master's degree from Roosevelt University, Chicago, in 1966. He also earned a specialist degree from Ball State in 1972.
After high school, he worked at the WPA recreation program and covered sports for the Post-Democrat, a Muncie weekly. He started work at The Muncie Star in 1936 as a sports and general news reporter and enrolled at Ball State Teachers College. He returned to The Star after serving in World war II and re-enrolled at Ball State in 1950 to complete his bachelor's degree. He also was a deputy coroner in Delaware County. He then worked for Western Electric Corp., Indianapolis, and handled public relations for the Indiana Office of Traffic and Safety before moving in 1959 to teach journalism at River Forest High School, Hobart. He worked at the Gary Post-Tribune while teaching in Hobart.
Mr. Satterfield returned to Muncie in 1965 to work for the Ball State News Bureau. He retired as assistant director of public information at Ball State in 1980. When he returned to Muncie, he returned to The Stat, too. He was a part-time sports reporter for several years and was The Star's religion writer for many years, retiring in January.
He was a member of the Muncie Mission board of directors, the advisory board of Salvation Army, Christian Ministries of Delaware County, Indiana State Teachers Association, Ball State Alumni Association, Society of Professional Journalists and First Church of God, Eaton. He was also a member of the Kiwanis Club, where he was on the board of directors twice and was recognized for perfect attendance.
Mr. Satterfield was inducted into the Delaware County Athletic Hall of Fame for his contributions as a member of the media.
He was a sergeant with the Army in World War II, earning an American Theater Ribbon, Associate-Pacific Theater Ribbon, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, Good Conduct medal and a Victory medal.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Kathryn Satterfield; a son, Gailon Satterfield (wife: Diana); two daughters, Joyce Reynolds (husband: Jack) and Sheila Satterfield; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two nieces.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Meeks Mortuary, with Rev. Wayne Anderson and Rev. Stuart Cranford officiating. Burial will be in Elm Ridge Cemetery. Calling will be 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and an hour before services Tuesday at the mortuary.
