DIES SUDDENLY AT THE COUNTY JAIL

Dory Gates, Aged 45, Goes Insane From Heat And Is Found Lying Along The St. Marys Pike

Had Been Showing Signs of Insanity For Several Days. Leaves Wife and Seven Children

Dory Gates, aged about forty-five years, died at the county jail about 7 o'clock Wednesday morning, where he had been taken a few minutes before by Policeman Kreitzer and E. C. Quellhorst. The body was later taken to the undertaking parlor of W. H. Princehouse and prepared for burial.

Gates has been showing signs of insanity for the past several days and it is believed that the intense heat is responsible for his death. He was employed at the Timeus Grocery Company store driving the delivery wagon. He worked up to last Saturday and all that day complained of a headache. He went home Saturday night and Sunday drove to Rosewood in the intense heat of the day and he had been out of his head since that time.

Early Wednesday morning, it was reported at the police that an insane man was sitting in the tall grass and weeds along St. Marys avenue just north of Piper street. Policeman Kreitzer secured Mr. Quellhorst and they drove out and found Gates lying along the road.

He was completely out of his head and when they asked him what he was doing he replied "I'm catching crawdads." Asked if he had any luck he replied, "Yes until the house fell down upon me."

They loaded him into the automobile and took him to the county jail. Hardly had he gotten into the Sheriff's office when he threw his arms over Policeman Kreitzer's shoulders and fell dead.

The Coroner was immediately notified and after making an investigation gave it as his opinion that Gates insanity was caused by the intense heat of the past several days which primarily caused his death.

Gates had been living with his family consisting of his wife and seven children in the old Brassil property along the C. H. and D. railroad north of the city. Mrs. Gates, when told of her husband's death Wednesday morning stated that he had been insane all night and that he left the house early in the morning without his hat or shoes on. He was found in this condition about an hour later by Policeman Kreitzer and Mr. Quellhorst.

The funeral services will be held at the home of James Gates on South Miami avenue Thursday afternoon at 4 o'clock. Interment at Graceland cemetery.

Death Certificate says he was born in 1872
His marriage record and census records support 1877
