Sister Maria Goretti Biggins OP., formerly Catherine Biggins, a member of the Sisters of St. Dominic of Blauvelt, New York for 60 years, died on Sunday, December 5, 2010 in Nyack Hospital, aged 79.

Born to Thomas Biggins and Mary Ellen Murphy on January 19, 1931 in New York City, she entered the Sisters of St. Dominic of Blauvelt, New York on January 5, 1950 from St. Benedict's Parish, Bronx. Receiving the Dominican habit on August 1, 1951, she professed her first vows on August 1, 1952, and her final vows on August 1, 1957. Holding a B.S., in Education and an M.S., in History and Philosophy of Education from Fordham University, as well as an Ed.D in Curriculum and Teaching from Columbia University, Sr. Maria Goretti's many years of active ministry were devoted the field of education. Her ministries included: St. Dominic's School, Blauvelt, New York, (1953 - 1956); (1973 - 1977); St. Luke's School, Bronx, (1956-1963); Holy Cross School, New York City, (1963-1970); St. Martin de Porres School, Poughkeepsie, (1971 - 1972); and Christ the King, Bronx, (1977 - 1982).

Biggins also ministered at Columbia University as a research assistant from 1982 until 1986; at the Catholic Guardian Society between 1986 and 1992; the John Jay College from 1992 till 1993; and Bronx Community College between 1994 and 1996. She served the Congregation as historian and worked for New York State as an educational consultant from 1996 until 2002, when due to ill health, she retired to the St. Martin de Porres.

Funeral Mass was held on Saturday, December 11, at St. Dominic's Convent, 496 Western Highway, Blauvelt, New York.
