Born in Baltimore, MD. Moved to Stanton, VA and then to Clark Co., Ky in 1798. Apprenticed to the tanning business. In 1808, his family moved to Christian Co, KY. James and Polly Husband were married April 1815 in KY and had three children there: Wm M born 10 Mar 1816 (married Elizabeth Moore and had children James W., Mathew, and Julia A.), Rebecca Ann born 5 Oct 1817 (married Elihu Stout), Mathew born 14 Mar 1819 (married Margaret J. McElvain with children William D., Mary E., Elizabeth, James Samuel, Charles M, Robert H., and Margaret S.). James and Polly moved to Sangamon Co., IL in October 1820 and had 2 more children: Elizabeth born 15 Apr 1821 (married in 1845 to Wm Orr) and David H. born 19 Apr 1824 (married Susan Organ in 1846 and had Susan A., William, Mathew Daniel, Benjamin F.,Bettie O., and Margaret F.)
James married a second time in 1846 to Lettie Nifong, and a 3rd time in 1865 to Elizabeth Gregory.
He established the first tannery in Sangamon Co., soon after settling here and supplied leather to the area.
