Conway -- Merle A Taylor, 77, of Poland Rd. a sheep farmer, died Wednesday night in an Ashfield nursing home. He was born in Buckland on March 31, 1889 the son of Frank W. and Alice (Burdick) Taylor and he had lived in Conway since 1947, coming from South Ashfield. He was known for raising Hampshire sheep which he showed at the fairs and he annually donated a ewe from his flock to the 4-H member who had exhibited the best lamb at the Franklin County Fair. He also raised and trained Shorthorn steers and had one of the few goat herds in the area. He sold goats milk for many years. His wife, the former Katherine Underhill, to whom he was married in 1928, died in April. His first wife, the former Lydia Belle Chapin, died in 1923. He leaves a son, Merwin C. Taylor of San Diego, Cal. Another son, Luther, died in 1931. Private services will be held at Smith Funeral Home in Shelburne Falls at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours. Donations may be made to the Heart Fund. Burial will be in the Center Cemetery in Ashfield. (from Springfield Union Dec, 2, 1966 pg 3)
