Archaeologist. Middleton grew up outside Charleston, coming from a wealthy aristocratic family. He was the son of Arthur Middleton a signer of the Declaration of Independence, and as his father before him he also was educated at Cambridge University in England. For many years he traversed Europe studying with other artists and while in Italy developed a keen interest in items of antiquity. He was so enamored by ruins in Rome that his water color painting of the "Roman Remains" painted about 1825 sold at auction in 2009 for a new world record price of $100,800.00 for a water color painting. Many of his early works were attributed to other artists, and it wasn't until the later part of the twentieth century that he gained universal recognition as the artist of many noted works of art previously credited to others. His lengthy work as an archaeologist on the Grecian Remains in Italy and other locations was the first contribution made by an American to the knowledge of classical antiquity, and he was called "the first American Classical Archaeologist by Charles Eliot Norton.
