Irene was born July 16, 1911 in Noonan, North Dakota, the eldest child of Thomas & Anna (Wiley) Brady. She graduated from Crosby High School, North Dakota in 1928. Upon graduation Irene received her teaching certificate and taught in one-room schoolhouses in Divide and Cass counties in North Dakota. In 1937, Irene moved to Iowa with her family and was later married on Sept. 22, 1942 to Arthur Nolan at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oelwein. She taught in the public, parochial and Amish schools until her retirement in the mid-1980s. Irene applied her creative talent to sewing, knitting, crocheting, quilting and tatting. She was an avid crossword puzzle worker, maintained correspondence in letters to relatives and former students, and liked to play her favorites on the piano and organ. Irene was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Rosary Society, Catholic Daughters, Retired Teachers Association and her rural neighborhood club. Irene showed her pioneer spirit as she lived her life on the farm, facing difficult times and good times with a strong faith in God and daily prayer. Irene is survived by three children; Joanne (Tony) Alessio of Independence; Jerry (Maureen) and Jim (special friend Sharon Robinson), both of Oelwein. One remaining sibling, Cathryn Kringlen of Oelwein; twelve grandchildren, twenty-seven great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
