James Alex "Jim" Homyak, Captain U.S. Navy (Retired), age 87, of Pensacola, passed away on December 17, 2010. Born in Denver, Colorado, raised and graduated from High School in Huntington Park, California. He later attended University of Southern California and graduated with a BS degree from George Washington University.
Jim joined the U.S. Navy as an Aviation Cadet in 1942. He graduated from flight school in 1943 and participated as a fighter pilot in four operations in the Pacific theater. At the end of World War II, Jim served in the regular Navy for 32 years in various duty assignments participating in Korea and Vietnam. He commanded Attack Squadron 56, was Commanding Officer of the USS Monticello (LSD 35), and was Commanding Officer of Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Training Wing Six at NAS Pensacola, and completed his Navy career as Commander Light Attack Wing U.S. Pacific Fleet, Lemoore, California. He retired in 1974 and moved to Pensacola.
Jim formed his own business, Diversified Property Sales, Inc., as a Real Estate Broker and specialized in condominium sales in the Destin area. After 12 years, Jim closed his business and purchased part of Bill Jones Tax Service participating as an Income Tax Preparer. He retired from business in 1993.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Jo Homyak; his children, Linda L. Homyak of Atlanta, GA, William A. Homyak of San Diego, CA, and James D. Homyak of Pensacola, FL; his brother, Donald Homyak and sisters, Shirley Gierloff and Betty Thayer.
The service will be held at 10:00 am on Wednesday, December 22nd at the All Faiths Chapel, Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Florida with the graveside ceremony at 11:00 am, Barrancas National Cemetery; followed by a reception at New World Landing, 600 South Palafox St., Pensacola.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Naval Aviation Museum Foundation, Naval Air Station, Pensacola, FL 32508.
