During the Civil War he enlisted as a private July 12, 1861, and was mustered into Company C, 15th Massachusetts Infantry.
He was wounded in action at Antietam, Maryland, September 17, 1862, and mustered out for disability September 7, 1863.
Henry filed for a Civil War veteran's disability pension December 28, 1863, and received application No. 38,021 and certificate No. 23,134.
Henry returned to Sterling where he married (1) Josephine L. Bartlett on May 3, 1866, and moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota. Josephine died at Minneapolis the following year and Henry accompanied her remains to Sterling, Massachusetts, for burial.
Henry married (2) Louise Ann Willett in 1868 and returned to Minneapolis. He had moved his family to Chicago, Illinois, by 1872 and was still there in 1880 (US Census).
Sometime thereafter he headed west to Cochise County, Arizona Territory. Henry Howe appears as a member of Tombstone's Burnside Post, Grand Army of the Republic, in 1886.
After his death in 1898, Louise filed for a Civil War widow's pension in Cochise County on January 7, 1899, and received application No. 689,255 and certificate No. 489,708. When Louise died she was buried next to Henry in Evergreen Cemetery.
