In 1940 he and his parents and two younger brothers lived in a house they owned in Cowansville, PA. Their home was valued at $1400. His father worked as a laborer for the P.W.A., with an income in 1939 of $1600 for 52 weeks of work, and he worked as a laborer for U.S. Dam, with an income in 1939 of $1092 for 28 weeks of work. He had already been married and divorced by then. His first wife was Helen Young. In 1940 their son Ronald lived with her parents and two of her sisters on their farm in West Franklin Township, Armstrong County, PA.

In 1950 he and his second wife and their five children lived in a house on Township Road 425 in North Buffalo Township, Armstrong County, PA. He worked as a truck driver for a lumber company, with an income in 1949 of $3700 for 52 weeks of work.
