Charles L. Parkhurst, deceased, was born in the city of New York, March 15, 1820, a son of Isaac and Sarah Parkhurst, both of whom were natives of Massachusetts. He was reared in his native city, and received a good business education. While quite young, he learned the carpenter trade and at the age of sixteen left New York for the West, where he worked at his trade on Funk's Semnary, La Grange Ky. In 1843 He married Elizabeth P Smith, daughter of John P. and Susan E. (Williams) Smith, natives of VA but who came to Kentucky in infancy. In the same year he settled in Pendleton, where he died, and where his widow now lives and has 243 acres of fine land, also 109 acres in another tract, and 157 in still another tract. He was for many years before his death a member of the Southern Methodist Church and ranked among the best citizens of Henry County. He was the father of 14 children-9 daughters and 5 sons: Martin V., Susan E., Sarah B., John W., Isaac R., Elizabeth E., Amanda F., Charles W., George A., Harriet V., Louisa B., Emma A., Mary H., and an infant. Six of his children are deceased. Martin V, the eldest was killed while a soldier in the Confederate Army, Charles W., Amanda F.,Mary H., and an infant. Emma A. died June 22, 1887. The lady and the family are all members of the Southern Methodist Church.
