J. P. Smith
The subject of this notice, J. P. Smith, was born in Hanover county, Va., June 10, 1803, and died in the city of Louisville May 25, 1883. His father, John Smith, son of Park Smith, of Virginia, emigrated to Henry county, Ky., in 1806. No tribute of respect could the writer of this notice give in befitting terms of J. P. Smith. Starting business as a farmer in Henry county, Ky., at the age of twenty-one years, while almost the entire country was a howling wilderness. He toiled through many privations and hardships with but the aid of a devoted Christian wife and honest convictions to make an honest living. To say that success attended his honest efforts would not express the usefulness of so great and good a man. He at all times took a deep interest in the welfare of his neighborhood and county, having at one time represented his Senatorial district in the State Senate. He was charitable and generous to all. A more devoted father to his children never lived, three of whom yet live to mourn the loss of a true father. A member of the Methodist church during most of his long life, and a firm believer in that God who giveth eternal life. The last business transaction of his life was ordering one of his children to give fifty dollars to help finish a Methodist church in Smithfield, Henry co., Ky. No law suits; no trouble with neighbors through all those long years. Is not such a man worthy of all praise? God grant that he may rest in peace.
