In 1890 Emile de Riesthal was a student at the Peekskill Military Academy. While there, he became acquainted with a pretty young 17 year old woman by the name of Edna Paulding. In early February Edna came to Manhattan to stay at the home of Mary Forgee, who lived at 709 Ninth Ave.

Edna, or Mrs. Emile de Riesthal as she called herself, said she and Emile had been secretly married, being unable to recall the name of the person who married them. Later, on February 24, 1892, she gave birth to her child, a baby girl. Both mother and child were doing well, but in March complications arose with Edna developing septicemia, and a severe brain infection, passing away on March 22.

Legal charges were brought against Emile by the girls father, who was bailed out of jail by his father Alphonse. The baby girl was taken by Edna's father back to Cortland. (Information obtained from a column in the March 25, 1892 issue of the New York Times).

In 1898 Emile was married to Mary Alice Mitchell, and they had a daughter who settled later in California with her husband.

On Sept 10, 1918, Emile registered for the draft. He and his second wife Mary Alice, resided at 1058 56th Street, Brooklyn, Kings County, NY. His date of birth was shown as October 19th,1873. He had brown eyes and blond hair. His occupation was shown as an aisle manager at Gimbel Brother's Department Store, at 33rd St & Broadway, NY,NY.

They later resided in Montclair, NJ, at 92 Welshman Ct, in the Caldwell Community(1923).
