Clarence Fetter "Stinky" Steinmetz (74)
Clarence "Stinky" Fetter Steinmetz of Twain Harte, a former Pacific Grove resident, died Wednesday of cancer at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula. He was 74. Born Dec. 10, 1923, in Hawaii, he had lived in Pacific Grove for most of his life. Five years ago he moved to Twain Harte. Mr. Steinmetz graduated from Pacific Grove High School in 1942 [1941 ed]. He served in the Navy during World War II and in the Korean War. He worked in the family business, Steinmetz Welding in Monterey, and then opened his own business. Peninsula Power Tools and Supply in New Monterey. Later he opened Pacific Grove Tool and Supply, operating both stores for 30 years. He retired in 1993. He was a member of the Monterey Elks Lodge, the Pacific Grove Masonic Lodge, the American Legion and the Monterey Moose Lodge. He was also a volunteer fireman with the Pacific Grove Fire Department. Mr. Steinmetz enjoyed fishing, woodworking and traveling. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Candace; a daughter, Lynette Allen of Watsonville; and two grandchildren. Services will be private. The Paul Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. The family suggests that any memorial contributions be sent to the donor's favorite charity.

Clarence "Stinky" Fetter Steinmetz, 74 ('41 of Twain Harte, CA, died April 1998) died unexpectedly April 22 at Community Hospital of Monterey, of cancer. A native of Hawaii, Stinky lived most of his adult life in PG. He served in the US Navy on a destroyer in WWII and the Korean Conflict. Following the war he worked in his family's business, Steinmetz Welding. Later he bought a business, Peninsula Power Tools and Supply next door to the welding shop. Years later he sold out then started another tool business in PG., PG Tool and Supply. After some 30-plus working years he finally retired in 1993. A skilled woodworker and top mechanic he also enjoyed fishing and traveling. Stinky was a member of the PG Masonic Lodge, the American Legion, the Elks and Moose lodges. For decades he was an active volunteer fireman with the PG Fire Dept and retired as a captain. Stinky was our first elected vice president 1962-1964, serving two years, then served on the board in 1964-1967 three more years. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Candace; a daughter, Lynette Steinmetz Allen '65 of Watsonville; and two grandchildren.

P.G. Youths Join Navy After Japs Bombard Hawaii
Pacific Grove young men have been among those who have swamped the Salinas Naval recruiting office since the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Enlistments in the U.S. Navy are continuing rapidly. Commander G.F. Hurekhardt, in charge of the Salinas office, located in the National Guard Armory, has sent the following list of boys actually called in the navy between December 8 and 28:
Pacific Grove: Ernest LeRoy Barbar, Robert Aaron Elkins, Gwynford Cuthbert Fiehle, George Merle Harvey, Clarence Fetter Steinmetz, Carl Donald Simon, Donald Eugene Thomarson, Howard Bert Wright, James Barnett Branson, Cecil Kilgana Branson, Douglas Gregory Thompson. Carmel: Logan Clarence Vandervort, George Hermage Myette. The list also includes 16 from Monterey, one each from Marina, Moss Landing and Del Monte.
