Lela Inez Ayers of Grant passed away on July 13, 2017, at the age of 88.

She was born to Johnny and Ruthie Pendergrass on April 1, 1929. She married Floyd Ayers in 1946 and was happily married 49 years until his passing in 1995. She lived all her married life in the same house just beside what is now Tucker Fitness Center.

Her hair and nails were always fixed, and she was often in the color red. Christmas was her favorite time of year. She always had a beautiful Christmas tree, and she made sure her whole family had gifts. Even when she became homebound she still made sure someone had bought gifts for each family member all the way down to the great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchild.

She was a very crafty person who enjoyed painting, sewing and making her own jewelry, ceramics and flower arrangements. She loved sweets even though she was diabetic and would often be found baking something sweet in her kitchen. The family loved when she would make homemade tamales about once a year and would all gather for their share. She did not meet a stranger, which helped her successfully run This and That Gifts and Flowers with her daughter, Myra, on Main Street in Grant for 21 years. It started out as a gift shop and grew into a craft store and then finally a florist. She encouraged her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren all to be crafty even into her older years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, two sisters, husband Floyd Ayers, and second husband Gordon Patterson.

She is survived by her son Jerry Ayers (Darlene), Myra Sutton (David), and sisters Jean Jackson and Nellie McCall. She also leaves behind five grandchildren, Chris Sutton, Tammy Weeks, Roschell Clark, Brian Ayers and Randy Ayers; 12 great-grandchildren, and one great-great granddaughter. She also leaves behind her beloved Pomeranian dog, Rocky, who would visit her at Barfield Nursing Home.

Mrs. Ayers was a member of the Grant Church of Christ, and Brother Clayton Tuggle officiated her service. Pallbearers were Chris Sutton, Brian Ayers, Chris Weeks, Rodney Clark and Matt Daugette. She was laid to rest at Free Home Cemetery next to her husband Floyd. Grant Memorial Chapel was entrusted with the arrangements.
