Ruth Thelma Hurst was born on December 20, 1913 in Memphis, Tennessee to parents, Albert Byron Hurst and Stella Pearl Harville Hurst.
She graduated from Tech High School in Memphis in 1931 and married Thomas Frierson Palmer in 1934. Mr. Palmer preceded her in death 1976. After rearing four children, Ruth earned her bachelor's degree in music in 1960 from Southwestern College at Memphis, now Rhodes College.
Upon graduation Ruth taught music to elementary school students. She was a very talented violin and cello player and a member of the Musicians Guild. Ruth played with the Memphis Symphony Orchestra, as well as, for Southwestern College at Memphis.
She began a third career raising Arabian horses and Manchester Terriers on her farm in Memphis. Later on after moving to Randolph County, Arkansas, Ruth added Nubian Goats to her farm.
In 1979 she married David Guthrie and they continued together raising the many breeds of animals. David preceded her in death in 1990. Ruth was a member of the Saint Paul Episcopal Church in Winston Salem, NC.
She moved to Breckenridge, Texas in 2002 from Winston Salem, NC. Ruth was also preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Nellie Desborough Allen.
Ruth is survived by one son, Greg Palmer and wife, Flo of Breckenridge, TX; three daughters, Jo Lynn and husband, Robert Allen of Walnut Cove, NC, Judy and husband, Harvey Jones of Memphis, TN Ald Vicki and husband, Jim King, of Seattle, WA; 11 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
