Small time drug dealer Willie Thompson, 39, was killed on 21 July 2003 while sitting in his car after leaving a karate club in Chadstone. Police say the gunman strolled up to the car and shot Thompson dead before escaping with a second person in a stolen Ford sedan. Some bullets were lodged in nearby shops. Thompson's official occupation was a lollipop vendor inside nightclubs, and a police report said he had recently developed an enmity with Nik Radev.

$1 million reward for killers of the gangland war's 'forgotten gangster':
A $1 million reward is being offered to catch the killers of a ''forgotten gangster'' from the Underbelly gangland war.
Purana taskforce has reopened the cold case of Willie Thompson, who was murdered in 2003.
Detective Inspector Tracie McDonald said his death in Malvern East came during a time when a number of gangland figures were being murdered, but it never received much public or media attention.
The reward comes as part of a review of unsolved cases investigated by the Purana Taskforce.
“While lots of people are familiar with other crime figures from the gangland period, not many people know anything about Willie Thompson’s story," Detective McDonald said.
“The circumstances surrounding his death are shocking – he was shot in a very public area and died a brutal death."
Thompson was a prolific drug dealer with connections to a range of gangland figures including Nik Radev and Carl Williams.
The 39-year-old had been at a Chadstone martial arts gym in Warrigal Road until the last class at 8.30pm on July 21.
He walked back to his silver Honda Roadster convertible, parked in Waverley Rd.
A red Ford sedan, believed to have been stolen earlier from a property in Travancore, drove across several lanes of traffic from a nearby car park and stopped near Thompson's vehicle.
A male passenger got out and fired shots at Thompson before the male driver also fired shots.
By 9.30pm, Thompson was dead.
Their car was found burnt out in a laneway off Bath Place, Port Melbourne.
Thompson was as a fairly quiet person, kept a strict routine, had a partner, and didn't like to draw attention to himself.
He ran a Chupa Chup vending business and had worked as a bouncer, but was known to be involved in drug trafficking with particular links to Western Australia.
“We know there are still people out there who know exactly what happened to Willie Thompson and why, and we’re appealing for those people to come forward," Detective McDonald said.
“Fourteen years is a long time and obviously circumstances can change, so people who did not feel comfortable speaking to police at the time may now be in a position to do so."
The Age reported in 2004 that a handgun and shotgun, the same combination of weapons used to murder Jason Moran and Pasquale Barbaro in Essendon North on June 21, were used to murder Thompson.
Police are hoping the reward will flush out an anonymous tipster, who contacted police in 2004 with information regarding the murder of Thompson.
“We’re confident that this murder is solvable – all we need is the right information from the right people,” Detective McDonald said.
The reward will be at the discretion of the Chief Commissioner of Police and the Director of Public Prosecutions may consider the granting of indemnification from prosecution to any person who provides information as to the identity of the main offender or offenders.
Detective Inspector Tracie McDonald said despite Thompson's connection with organised crime networks, including Carl Williams and Jason Moran, police were "confident that a number of people involved in the circumstances surrounding his death are still alive".
After 14 years and "many changed circumstances", she believes there may be some people who are more confident to come forward and speak to police. She said after such a long period of time, "relationships change".
She said police had also spoken with Thompson's family.
"They are, of course, happy for anything that might progress this matter, but understandably reliving the details of Willie's murder is quite traumatic for his family.
Investigators are appealing to anybody with knowledge of this crime and of those responsible to contact police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
