Eugene Thomas Madigan, of Wethersfield, formerly of Windsor and West Hartford, died Saturday (July 11, 2009) at Hartford Hospital while surrounded by his daughters.

Born in Hartford, he was the only son of Patricia (Clarke) Madigan and the late Eugene S. Madigan.

He attended St. Joseph Cathedral School, belonged to the Cathedral Cub Scout Den, and sang in the Boy's and Men's Choir at the cathedral. In 1964, the family moved to Newington, where Tom (as he was called by everyone) participated in Little League baseball (PAC) and later on joined the Police Explorer Scouts. He also performed as a singer with the Jane Hart Cheer Troupe and the Insurance Clubs Entertainment Bureau which performed benefit shows at area institutions and for various groups.

Tom graduated from St. Mary's School and Newington High School, where he played varsity soccer. He was a four year veteran of the U.S. Navy and received advance training at NATTC, Memphis and at SAR, Quonset. He served at Naval Air Stations stateside and in the Atlantic including Lajes Field, Azores and Hamilton Field, Bermuda.

Upon completion of four years of military service, he worked for the CT State Labor Department before attending GHCC. He also worked for Connecticut Transit and was a long time employee of Electrical Wholesalers Inc. of Hartford and Middletown. Tom had a wide spectrum of enjoyments including NASCAR, Rock and Roll and Golden Oldies, The Boston Pops, British Comedies on public television, Dog the Bounty Hunter, Howard Stern on Satellite radio, good food, and more. A devoted family man, he lived for his children and grandsons.

He was plagued by poor health for the past five years. In 2007, he survived a quintuple heart bypass only to be devastated with a 2008 diagnosis of terminal bile duct cancer. He endured his illness with great courage and determination. His daughters and his two grandsons devotedly took him on short outings and day trips until he became too frail to go.

In addition to his mother, who was his caregiver and with whom he lived since January 2009, he leaves three daughters, Elizabeth Madigan and her fiancé Christopher Rutledge of Windsor, Erin Madigan-Scheidel and her husband Alex along with their sons Nicholas and Thomas of Bristol and Kate Madigan of Windsor. He also leaves three sisters, Patricia Carpenter of Newington, Maureen Plourd and her husband Ken of Newington and Rosemary Forrest of New Britain. Additionally, he is survived by many nieces and nephews including Kenny Plourd of Rocky Hill who has been especially attentive to his Uncle Thomas during the past two years.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, 626 Willard Avenue, Newington.
Burial with full military honors accorded will follow in West Meadow Cemetery.
