During Union General William Sherman's devastating march to the sea across Georgia in 1864, Sarah Hunt's house was spared but everything else was stolen or burned. Many neighbors came to sleep on her floor, as their houses had been burned. At the close of the war, her husband Capt.Joseph Hunt, returned from the war broken in body and very ill. They sold everything they had left and "bought" land in Henderson County TX from a gentleman from Tyler, TX. During their journey to Texas, they were living in Lee County Alabama according to the 1870 census. Sarah had given birth to their sixth child in Lee County in 1869. Some time later, Joseph died in Opelika. Sarah continued on in an oxen drawn wagon with her young children and settled in Concord in Henderson County TX. After clearing the land and building a house, she found that the title to her land was no good, a common occurence in post-war days. She was farming land owned by a Mr. Murchison who, out of generosity, allowed the family to stay. Sarah Hunt had known the luxury of plantation life and on her death bed said her "only regret was dying on rented land." Sarah Cole Harden Hunt died in Concord, Texas at the age of 50. She is buried in a small cemetery behind the Concord Baptist Church just outside Chandler.

Personal note: I feel such admiration for my gr gr grandmother just for her perseverance alone.
