OBITUARY :
MRS. BETTY V. (SHINDLEDECKER) HAFFNER, 85, a resident of Menno Haven Nursing Home, Chambersburg, PA and formerly of Mount Vernon Terrace, Waynesboro, PA, passed away at 3:25 P.M., Wednesday, December 22, 2010 in the nursing home, surrounded by her daughters. She had been in failing health for the past four months and critically ill since Monday.

Born March 23, 1925 in Waynesboro, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Nellie (Sheffler) Shindledecker.

Mrs. Haffner was a graduate of Waynesboro High School with the Class of 1943.

She and her husband, the late Mr. Harry Richard Haffner, were married June 18, 1944 in Evangelical Lutheran Church, Waynesboro. He died September 1, 1956. She entered the nursing home December 7, 1999.

Mrs. Haffner was employed at Landis Machine Company and Waynesboro YMCA. Prior to her retirement in 1987, she was employed as a secretary at Landis Tool Company. Following her retirement, she worked part-time for Ronnie Martin Realty and Bercaw's Village Barn, both of Waynesboro.

She was a member of Evangelical Lutheran Church, Waynesboro, where she was active with the sewing belles and the altar guild. She also was a member of Joe Stickell American Legion Post #15 Ladies Auxiliary, Waynesboro Hospital Auxiliary and South Chapter AARP #2977, all of Waynesboro, National AARP and Homemakers of America.

Mrs. Haffner enjoyed knitting, crocheting, needle point, ceramics, traveling, shopping, and spending time with her family.

She is survived by two daughters, Linda K. Bernhisel and her husband Mike and Barbara H. Rock and her husband Jim, all of Waynesboro; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; her sister, Emma Jane Swope of Waynesboro; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her grandson, Jason Foreman; and two brothers, Charles Shindledecker and Robert Shindledecker.

Services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Monday, December 27, 2010, in the Evangelical Lutheran Church, 43 South Church Street, Waynesboro, with the Rev. Dennis Beaver officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M., Sunday evening, in Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Evangelical Lutheran Church, 43 South Church Street, Waynesboro, PA 17268.
