Darrel was born in Huddy, KY, prior to his family moving and settling in Dayton, Ohio.
He enlisted in the Marines 15 September 1967, at the Cincinnati Recruiting Office.
Darrel arrived in Vietnam 27 April 1968 and was assigned to the Mortar Platoon, with Echo Company, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division.
Darrel was wounded by enemy rifle fire when hostile enemy forces probed the 3rd Platoon's day time defensive perimeter, during Operation Dewey Canyon, near the Laotian Border, 43 kilometers west of the Quang Tri Combat Base.
Darrel sustained a gunshot wound to the head, at 1000H and died as a result of the gunshot wound, at 1230H, aboard the USS Sanctuary.
Darrel was single and served his country for 1 year, 6 months and 10 days and KIA #39,622.
He had been in Vietnam for 10 months and 27 days.
Darrel was 19 years, 7 months and 6 days old.
Survived by his parents; Lawrence B and Maude M Napier of 17 Burton Avenue, Dayton, Ohio and His two brothers; Walter and David Napier that were serving in Marines.
