Dorothy Joan Vaughan
March 28, 1909 – October 6, 2010

A celebration of Dorothy Vaughan's 101 years of life will be held from 4-8 PM, Friday, December 3rd at the Coos Art Museum, 235 Anderson, Coos Bay OR. The family invites the community to this celebration and an art exhibit, proceeds of which will go to the museum. Call 541 269 9039 for RSVP. Family graveside services will be held at a later date.

Dorothy was born in 1909 in San Francisco to Allen Roscoe York and Mary Eloise Brinkerhoff York. She passed peacefully at 101 after a sudden illness here in Coos Bay, Wednesday, October 6th.

Her family moved to Portland, Oregon when she was 5 yrs old. She attended Holy Child Academy and then to University of Oregon, where she met George Vaughan of North Bend OR while both were in the Architecture & Fine Arts Department in 1931. They were married in Portland in 1932 and moved to North Bend as George was needed in his father, Bill Vaughan's, lumber business, Coos Bay Logging Company. They built their home in Barview in 1936 overlooking the ocean where they lived for over 40 years, raising four children, Don, Denny, Mike and Mary Jo.
In the 50's George started Cooston Lumber Company and Dorothy managed family affairs, always a positive and caring mother and wife.
They helped start the Coos Bay Yacht Club on the bay near the Al Pierce docks on 101 and raced in many regattas amongst the ship traffic, tugs with log rafts, white caps and tides. Later, they were a part of acquisition and construction of the club at Ten Mile Lakes and sailed into their 70's. During this time they helped form the Coos Artist League, a group meeting once a week, drawing, painting and exhibiting their work together and later both helped develop what is now the Coos Art Museum. Their art and architecture background allowed them to begin their interior design business, Vaughan Interiors in the Hall building in 1960 as Members of ASID, The American Society of Interior Designers.

They built their new home in 1977 on Telegraph Hill and continued the design business there until retirement in 1985. Dorothy & George travelled and painted Oregon landscapes and seascapes, but also in South America, Asia and Europe. Both enjoyed each other through their artistic vision. Their enthusiasm affected all relationships, especially the members of the family. Dorothy leaves behind a beautiful legacy and a large body of work in many homes and offices. She was an inspiration and role model for all to see the beauty in everything, especially her garden full of flowers, the subject of much of her work.

Dorothy is survived by her four children Don Vaughan, wife Patty and grandchildren Mark & Jeff; Denny, wife LuAnne and grandchildren Matt, Aimie, Stein and Dagny; Mike Vaughan, wife Deborah and grandchildren Kooper, Bill and Lucia; and Mary Jo Ten Pas, husband Tom and grandchildren Kristin and Ross. She was preceded in death by her husband George in 1985.

The family suggest memorial contributions be made to the Coos Art Museum, 235 Anderson, Coos Bay. 541 267 3901
