John was a member of United States Marine Corps Squadron VMD-154. This was a Marine Photographic Squadron that flew aerial reconnaissance missions in the South Pacific during World War II. The squadron was based at Camp Elrod, Espiritu Santo, New Hebrides.
On August 7, 1982, when the squadron formed a reunion association during their first reunion, John was elected as the first squadron Commander of VMD-154 Association.
