Miss Ruth was born in Hearne, Texas, April 9, 1910, and was a resident of Shreveport since 1932. Married for 55 years to her beloved husband Andy, they owned and operated Andrews Grocery for 50 years before Andy retired. Never one to sit idle - "Up and a doing and doing to a purpose" was her mantra - Ruth took computer classes in her mid-80's and began working as the assistant to City Councilman John David Stewart for eight years, until she was 92. Since her youth, she loved the outdoors and athletics, especially when they involved family. Ruth was a terrific athlete, earning her the title of Shreveport City Amateur Golf Champion in the mid 1930's. Her passion for the outdoors, especially birds and flowers, was shared as a lifetime member of the Girl Scouts, where she served as the president of the Pelican Council and the camp director at Camp Wawbansee and was the oldest registered member of the Pelican Council. A devoted mother always involved in her children's interests, she served as the president of the Caddo Heights Elementary and Linwood Junior High and was also a PTA Lifetime Member. She loved her church family at Caddo Heights Methodist and at its closing joined First United Methodist Church. Ruth and her husband enjoyed sharing their Lake Bistineau camp with their children and grandchildren and many friends, with Ruth's active lifestyle allowing her to water ski well into her seventies. She took pride in seeing all six of her great grandchildren baptized. Her greatest joy was sharing life with the people she loved, whether it was catching beads at the Mardi Gras parades or watching the great grandkids play in the yard, always with a cup of coffee in her hand. Many generations of family and friends have been and will continue to be blessed by Ruth's proud legacy filled with over a century of hard work, family values, and generous spirit.
Ruth was preceded in death by her husband Charles "Andy" Andrews, Jr., her parents, two sisters, two brothers, and her great granddaughter Faith Elizabeth Andrews.
She is survived by her daughter Betty Andrews Osborn, son, Charles Elliotte Andrews, III, and wife Marsha; grandchildren Charles Elliotte Andrews, IV, and wife Allison, Andy Osborn and wife Michelle, Ashley Stinson and husband Pat; great grandchildren Madeline, Eli, Maggie, Anna Grace, Mary, and Sarah; longtime friend Evelyn Wilcox, and a number of nieces, nephews, and other friends.
Pallbearers will be Charles Andrews, IV, Andy Osborn, Pat Stinson, Hoyt Tompkins, Les Tompkins, Duke Mandina, T.J. Mandina, Jimmy Farmer, and Jackie Sayles. Honorary pallbearers are Michael Fleming, Doug Bland, Ronnie Stokes, Al Cook, Wayne Tidwell, and John David Stewart.
The family requests that memorials be made in lieu of flowers to the First United Methodist Shreveport's television ministry or the Gibsland United Methodist Church, or a charity of their choice. The family would also like to thank Matilda Johnson, loving caregiver to Miss Ruth, and Dr. Manapragada and the wonderful nurses at Highland Schumpert.
