SOUTHAMPTON - Mrs. Anna Josephine (Brown) Bissonnette, 81 of Southampton went to meet her Breathmaster on Sunday, February 26, 2006. She had resided in Southampton for the last forty-four years. She was 3/4 Yuchi/Creek Native American born in Sapulpa, Creek County, Oklahoma on March 16, 1924 to Chief Yuchi Micco Fus Hucha Yahola aka Samuel Wayne Brown, Sr., the last Hereditary Chief of the Yuchi/Creek Tribe and Mary Josephine Wadsworth, a Creek Indian. She was taken away from her paternal grandparents, Chief Samuel William Brown, Jr and Mattie May (Payne) Brown after the death of her mother, a month after she was born and raised by Patrick J. and Annie (Doran) McAlpine, Sr. of Holyoke, MA. She was a 1942 graduate of St. Jerome High School and a 1946 graduate of College of Our Lady of the Elms. Her first teaching job was a one room schoolhouse in Cummington, MA, teaching grades 1 through 5. She marred her husband, George J. Bissonnette, Sr. on September 13, 1947 and they enjoyed 52 years together. She returned to college and got her degree in Early Childhood Development. She taught school at St. Jerome in Holyoke and did substitute teaching positions in Holyoke, Southampton and South Hadley, and retired at the age of 62 as a Resource Teacher from Abner Gibbs School in Westfield. After her retirement, she enjoyed numerous trips to Aruba, Hawaii and a cruise on the Song of Norway with her husband and best friend, George. She belonged to the Massachusetts Retired Teachers Association, Alumni of the Class of 1946 College of Our Lady of the Elms, past member of the Pequot Lake Civic League of Southampton and a past member of the Southampton Police Association. She was an active member of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Holyoke up until a few years ago. She was also a past member of the Pequot Lake Civic League Women's Club. She was an enrolled member of the Mvskoke (Muscogee) Creek Nation of Oklahoma which comprised of the Five Civilized Tribes and was an active voter in the Tribal elections up until her death. Her Native American Family History dates back to pre 1889 and she was proud of the Native American Ancestry which has been traced back over 6 generations. She was predeceased by her husband, George J. Bissonnette, Sr. on March 3, 1999, her daughter Barbara (Bissonnette) Walz-Baillargeon on April 5, 2003, her father, Chief Yuchi Micco Fus Hucha Yahola on July 26, 1990 and her half sister, Penny Sue Brown of Mathis, San Patricio, Texas on February 19, 1982. She was the last surviving Yuchi/Creek Indian in her family from the original Enrollment of Native Americans with the Dawes Commission. She leaves to cherish her memory her Caregiver and daughter, Annmarie J. (Bissonnette) Christian of the home, her granddaughter and Caregiver, Toni-Marie Christian of the home and her great-granddaughter and Caregiver, Leanne-Marie Christian of the home. She is survived by her half sister, Mary Alice Brown-Wilkerson (Curtis) of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, her half sister Patricia Jean (Brown) Stapp of Corpus Christi, Texas, her half brother, Samuel Wayne Brown, Jr. of Giddings, Texas, her grandson, William J. Christian, III. Also survived by her son, George J. Bissonnette, Jr. (Joan) of Chicopee, MA, grandchildren, Janelle, George and Edmund; grandson Glen R. Walz (Dawn), a Westfield Fireman/Paramedic and great-grandchildren, Darren and Justin; grandson, Randy L. Walz, Jr. (Dawn), a Gunnery Sergeant in the Marines of Beaufort, SC and a great-grandson, Devon; grandson, Eric J. Walz and great-grandson Eric, Jr.; Son-in-law, Randy L. Walz, Sr. (Karen) of Wallingford, CT and grandsons, Jeremy and Matthew and a cousin, Bobbie Lynn Cole of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Special thanks to my mother's Home Health Aide, Nayroby Rosa and her nurse, Marie Dietz, R.N. and Charlotte her wound care specialist and her nurse Kimber from the Visiting Nurse Association of Holyoke. Pall Bearers will be her daughter, Annmarie J. Christian, granddaughter, Toni-Marie Christian, grandson, William J. Christian, III, son-in-law Randy L. Walz, Sr.; grandsons Randy L. Walz, Jr. and Glen Richard Walz. Funeral will be held Friday at 9:00 a.m. from the Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton Street, followed by a Mass in Holy Cross Church at 10:00 a.m., burial will follow in St. Jerome Cemetery, all in Holyoke.
