Sampson was the son of David Poffenbarger (1834) and Catharine Shoemaker Poffenberger (1824). He was one of five children. They were: Samson (1852), Otho (1854), Martin (1856), Mary Susan (1863), and Jerome (1869). Samson married Susan E. Palmer (1853-1910) abt. 1870 in Washington Co., MD. They had 13 children. They were: Emory E. (1872), Benjamin (1873), Harmon (1878), Annie M. (1875), Fannie C. "Mae" (1880), Olin (1880), Clayton (1884), Addie (1885), Victor (1887), David W. (1889), Minnie H (1893), Daisey (1893), and an infant (1894). Sampson was a farmer.
