Merchant To Be Buried At Defiance

The body of Thomas H. Starr, 86, credited with starting the nation's first chain store in 1887, who died last Wednesday will be buried at his former home in Defiance, O.
Resident of Los Angeles since 1900 when he retired, Starr, formerly affiliated with some of the country's largest merchantile firms, including Clathlin Co., was once mayor of Defiance, first Republican ever elected to the post.
Mr. Starr had merchantile establishments in Defiance, Sherwood and Paulding and he was the first employer John Durk ever worked for, being employed in both the Starr Store in Defiance and at Sherwood. Ben Moore also chose Mr. Starr as his first employer, working for him in the Paulding establishment, which was known as Starr's Bargain House. many of the old-timers no doubt recall both Mr. Starr and his Paulding store.

Note - although this story says he would be buried in Ohio, he was actually buried in California. Thanks to "Tropico Gravers" for finding this information.
