After the war rather than go back to New Hampshire he was hired by the railroad and moved to Ogden, UT. He left the railroad and moved his family to Ovid, ID in 1878. It was in that area where he became a US Marshall, was the Post Master, and was elected as Justice of the Peace. He was well respected in the area and when President Teddy Roosevelt visited the area, Charles rode in a buggy with him from the rail station to the fair grounds, and also sat next to the President on the stand. He was good friends with Senator Fred DuBois and he became a bailiff to the Idaho State Legislators. Senator DuBois visited Charles many times, and he especially enjoyed visiting the child Charles named after him, Fred DuBois McCurdy.
