Charles Wesley McCurdy moved to Utah with his wife, Eva Hall who was a frail lady. Charles hired a young 14 year old girl to assist Eva with the household chores and children. They had nine children: Burt, Win, Earl, Nelly, Fred, Ray, Gena, Charles, and Mabel

Charles Wesley McCurdy graduated from Wesleyan University, but rather than become a minister he enlisted in the Union Army during the Civil War. He was wounded, captured, escaped, and went home, where he was discharges. However, he reenlisted fought several major battles and received a promotion to First Lieutenant. After the war rather than go back to New Hampshire he was hired by the railroad and moved to Ogden, UT. He left the railroad and moved his family to Ovid, ID in 1878. It was in that area where he became a US Marshall, was the Post Master, and was elected as Justice of the Peace. He was well respected in the area and when President Teddy Roosevelt visited the area, Charles rode in a buggy with him from the rail station to the fair grounds, and also sat next to the President on the stand. He was good friends with Senator Fred DuBois and he became a bailiff to the Idaho State Legislators. Senator DuBois visited Charles many times, and he especially enjoyed visiting the child Charles named after him, Fred DuBois McCurdy.
