Tom grew up in Sparta, Wisconsin graduating from high school there in 1922. He graduated from Washington and Lee University in Virginia in 1925 with a business degree. In September of that year he tracked down his high school sweetheart, Josephine Canfield who had moved with her family to Kansas City, Missouri. They married there and returned to Sparta where he joined his father's business, Jefferson Leaf Tobacco Company. In 1942 he joined the Merchant Marines during WWII, traveling to ports in Algiers and Moroco. Twice, ships he was on were torpedoed and sunk. After the war he returned home and went to work for the Universal Tobacco Company. He and 'Jo' moved to Virginia and later Maryland. In 1952 he retired from the tobacco industry and he and 'Jo' settled in Waukesha, Wisconsin where he opened a toy store. He suffered a heart attack and died there on August 15, 1952. He is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in the Canfield Family Plot next to his wife Josephine 'Jo' Canfield.
