OBITUARY

John Drug, Sr., was born in Ljusdal Socken, Sweden, May 14, 1812. Married to Anna Oman, October 12, 1832. Came to America in 1849 and lived for a few years in Knox and Mercer counties in Illinois; removed to Rock Island county, Ill., in 1856, where he resided until 1864, when he came to Hardin township, Webster county, Iowa, and settled on what is known as the Drug farm. He moved from the farm to Stratford in 1896, where his death occurred Nov. 29, 1899. His wife died in Stratford, October, 1896. Five children were born to them, three sons and two daughters. One son and one daughter died before the parents. Two sons and one daughter are living who together with nine grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren, remain to mourn their loss.

It falls to the lot of but few to live to the ripe age of past 87 years, who have passed through the hardships that were experienced by Father Drug. In 1849, when he reached the shores of America, the Asiatic cholera was raging, and Father Drug was twice attacked by the dreadful disease. The journey of his family in 1851 calls to mind the great improvement in transportation facilities. It took the family just one year to complete the journey from their home in Sweden to Knox county, Ill. They were thirty-three weeks on the Atlantic Ocean, twice driven by storms to England and Portugal, reached Buffalo, then the end of the railway service, in the middle of the winter and had to wait for navigation to open. During the year required for this journey, Father Drug never heard from the family, and he had almost given them up for lost before they reached the journey's end.
