Robert L. Causey was a son of Joseph Fletcher Causey and his wife Mary Rebecca McCulloch, of Randolph County, NC. He served in the Confederate Army, in Co. I, 22nd NC Regiment, CSA, and was a Corporal.

In 1867, Robert married Amanda J. "Minnie" Teague (1843-1933), their marriage bond dated 8 Oct. 1867. They had three children: Fletcher Wayland Causey (1868-1942), Henry Causey (1870-) and Myrtle Ella Causey (1876-1959).
