Ida Mildred Clement Johnson, age 91, of Givens Estates Methodist Retirement Community in Asheville, North Carolina, died Tuesday, August 13, 2002. She was born October 19, 1910, in Rover, Arkansas, to Dr. and Mrs. C. A. Clement. She was educated there, completing the last two years of high school and two years of college at Arkansas Technological University in Russellville, Arkansas. She completed her degree in Home Economics at Oklahoma State University where she was the only woman on the Student Senate. She was employed by the Arkansas Extension Service in Wynne, AR for 9 years.
On May 7, 1943, she married 1st Lieutenant Hollie Arvel Johnson. After his discharge in December 1945, they made their home on Martling Road, Albertville, Alabama in the Hustleville community where they were members of Fairview United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Johnson served the church in various capacities including teaching the women's Sunday School Class for many years. She helped organize the first Bible School, served as Communion Steward and on various church committees.
She taught at Asbury Junior High School from 1949-1954. She developed their lunchroom and operated it in its beginning alongside her teaching duties. She taught at McCord Avenue Elementary School and at Evans Elementary School in Albertville from 1955-1973.
She was a member of the Marshall County Chapter of Kappa Kappa Iota and served as State Treasurer. She was the leader of a Girl Scout Troop for 5 years, beginning in 1955. She began the county day camp and directed it for two years.
After her retirement, she was an active volunteer in the auxiliary of the Marshall County Medical Center South, helping establish the Lifeline Project. She was recognized for her efforts in Soil Conservation by the Marshall County District. She moved to Givens Estates United Methodist Retirement Community in Asheville, NC, in 1997.
She was preceded in death by her husband and her brothers, Charles B. "Foots" Clement of Memphis, Tennessee, Marc Ray Clement of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and W. J. Clement of Russellville, Arkansas.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Mary Rebecca and Joseph Eugene Parks of Asheville, NC; her granddaughter, Ida Lee Norrell of Greensboro, NC, and her grandson, David Clement Norrell of Los Angeles, CA; one niece and 4 nephews.
A memorial service was held Saturday, August 17, 2002 at 2:00 p. m. at Fairview United Methodist Church in Hustleville. Memorial gifts may be made to Boaz-Albertville Hospital Auxiliary Lifeline Project, Hospice of Marshall County, Gevens Estates United Methodist Retirement Community, Glennwood Mental Health Adult Services, or the Crippled Children's Hospital in Birmingham.
