Mr. Sheppard was born April 9, 1921 in Greenville, S.C. a son of Dedrick Beamon and Amanda Jane Bruce Sheppard. For 30 years he worked with the Guilford County Department of Social Services retiring on April 30, 1988. Mr. Sheppard was a veteran of WW II serving as a member of the "Hell on Wheels" Second Army Division. He served in North Africa, Sicily; landed at Omaha Beach and later fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He served from December 1942 until he was discharged at Camp Butner in July 1945. After the war he attended Wofford College and earned his BA degree in 1949. He earned his Masters in Social Work from Tulane University.
Mr. Sheppard was a member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church.
On October 2, 1946 he was married to the former Nannette Tucker who survives of the home.
Surviving in addition to his wife are one daughter, Beverly S. Briggs and husband Ronald of Rougemont; two sons, Ralph L. "Rick" Sheppard, Jr. and wife Sharon of Bainbridge Island, Washington, David Bruce Sheppard of Charleston, S.C.; four grandchildren, Ezra Sheppard and wife Sofia, Sarah Sheppard, Adrienne Briggs, Laura Briggs and two great grandchildren, Ella and Nova Sheppard.
A Memorial Service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church Chapel conducted by the Reverend Richard Howle.
In lieu of flowers the family request memorials be made to Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, PO Box 5289, High Point, N.C. 27262
