Fred was born in Utica, N.Y., June 25, 1914, the first of two sons, to Raymond M and Marie L (Teller) Fey. On November 18, 1938, Fred and Evelyn Reinkensmeier were united in marriage in Kansas City, MO. In 1939, Fred and his father, Ray, Sr purchased the Eau Claire city bus fleet from the Northern States Power Company. Fred moved his family to Eau Claire in 1942, and operated the Eau Claire Transportation Company, La Crosse Transit Company, and Winona Transit Company with his father and brother. In 1975, Fred, his brother Ray, and Fred's son, Phil, continued in busing, operating Student Transit-Eau Claire, Inc. Fred and his brother, Ray, were instrumental in the development of Howard Johnson Motels in Eau Claire and Wausau, and purchase of the Maple Manor Motel in Eau Claire. Fred served as vice-president of the WI School Bus Association for many years. He was active in Jaycees and the YMCA Board of Directors. He always loved cars, and told stories of his life by relating to the cars he had owned over the years. Sailing, boating and camping with his family were enjoyable to him. He was dedicated to his church and attended daily mass for 60 years. He was a terrific caregiver to his wife, Evelyn, in her later years. Fred and Ray enjoyed delivering Meals on Wheels when they were in their 80's. He very much enjoyed volunteering at Sacred Heart Hospital - greeting and meeting visitors with a cheery, positive attitude and smile. He made many dear friends there. His family meant everything to him, and he always encouraged them to do their best, and above all, to be HAPPY.
Fred was preceded in death by Evelyn in 1992; and his parents. Frederic Leo Fey, "Fred," age 96, passed away peacefully at Sacred Heart Hospital on Monday, September 27, 2010, with his family and friends at his side.
He is survived by his four children...
