James Linville (Jim) Campbell was born in Tennessee in 1828, second son (and 3rd child of 14) of Asa Campbell and Rebecca Curtis. He migrated to Missouri with his parents, and married Nancy White Vanderpool in 1851. They had 12 children. All four of his brothers who were of age to serve in the Civil War did so, but James did not, possibly because of the seven children he was supporting at the outbreak of the war. It is sometimes mistakenly assumed that he did serve in the war, because a like-named cousin did.

Nancy (Vanderpool) Campbell died early in 1900 in Kansas City, Kansas. After Nancy's death, James was listed on the 1900 census living with his daughter and son-in-law, Artemissa and George Altop. Later that year he remarried to Mrs. Mary Owsley; the groom was 72 and the bride 71. He died in Kansas City, Kansas on 9 October 1910 and is buried next to his first wife.

from the Kansas City (Kansas) Gazette-Globe, 12 October 1910, page 1:
"James Campbell, 84 years old, died yesterday at the Wyandotte county farm west of this city. A widow survives. Funeral services were held this afternoon. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery."
