Ellen died in 1913. John drove a team of horses in a number of jobs most of his adult life, from salvage to deliveries. He died suddenly of a heart attack on 18 November 1920 in Kansas City, Kansas, and was laid to rest next to his wife.
All known photographs of John Campbell were lost when the 1951 flood swept through Kansas City.
