MEMOIRS - Lillian May (Perry) Gowen:
and Raymond Skillings:
******************************
Frederick and Lillie lived on the Snake River in the little town of Guffey in Idaho. They were very poor and did not have any of the comforts of life; they were living in a little shack which had a dirt floor. Lillie would catch fish from the Snake River and sell them in Kuna to earn money to buy food for the family. Frederick had no skills and occasionally worked as a farm hand; usually he hung around the river to fish and hunt for gold and arrow heads. Lillie left this marriage and moved with her children into town. Lillie became ill and had to put her children in the Children's Home. Three children were adopted, three went their own way, and two remained in the Home [Lillian and Elsie] for about three months.
Lillie was a small and pretty woman. She stopped Arthur on the street one day and asked if he needed a housekeeper because she heard that he and his son, Cecil, were living alone. Arthur hired her, and she moved in with her two daughters, Lillian and Elsie. Arthur paid her a salary plus room and board. During this time, Lillie was involved with Charles Harrison and they married. Her daughters cried upon having to move out,
and Arthur was very disappointed because he
had become very fond of Lillie.
Charles Harrison and Lillie ran the Semloh Hotel, but it was hard work with very little money, so Charles and Lillie divorced.
Arthur constantly urged Lillie to return as his housekeeper, which she did and eventually they married. Arthur adopted Lillie's two daughters [Lillian and Elsie]. Lillie's son, Fred, came to live with them. Arthur did not like Fred, though fed and clothed him but did not adopt him or treat him very well. Fred worked in Arthur's shop until he graduated then moved to New York where he became a very wealthy owner of several stores.
When Lillie was diagnosed with cancer, her medical expenses took all of Arthur's funds. Her daughter, Elsie, moved in with Arthur and Lillie to care for her. Elsie would give her mother morphine shots to relieve her pain. The shots created big knots over Lillie's entire body, which was covered with them until there were no more places to give shots. After her death, Elsie and her husband, Ira William Skillings, continued to reside with Arthur.
