She graduated from Atlanta Girls High School, Class of 1925, Wesleyan College in 1929, and Emory University School of Librarianship in 1930.

She was a librarian in the Carnegie Library (later named Atlanta Public Library, now Atlanta-Fulton Public Library) for 25 years. She retired in 1976.

Native and longtime resident of Atlanta, Georgia, and resident of Griffin, Georgia, since 1979.

Great-grandniece of Alexander Hamilton Stephens, former US Congressman, Vice-President of the Confederate States of America, and Governor of Georgia. A large portrait of A. H. Stephens hung in her living room for decades.


Member of Griffin First Presbyterian Church.
