Harry attended the University of Nebraska from 1906 to 1908. In 1907, he spent the summer break living and working in California, where he viewed the damage left behind by the San Francisco earthquake and fire of 1906. He later joined his father and stepmother to homestead in the Mojave Desert of California, and also worked as a carpenter, from 1913 to 1920. He married Verna Harlow on 24 December 1913, in Riverside, California.

Harry eventually decided to leave farming and become a teacher. He received a B.A. degree from Santa Barbara State Teacher's College in the class of 1923 (the first graduating class after the school became a four-year institution; it is now UC-Santa Barbara). He was a teacher (and head of the Mechanical Arts Department) at Anaheim Union High School from 1923 to 1952.

Harry and Verna owned and operated Moon Camp Lodge in Big Bear Lake, California from 1937 to 1958.

Harry was father to seven children: Margery (b. & d. 1917), Harry Lee Jr. (b. & d. 1918), Elizabeth, John William, Robert Harlow, James Dexter, and Mary Ann.
