US Navy, World War II
Married twice but had no children. He felt as if the world was a bad place and that it was wrong for people to bring children into it.

Vernard was called "Big Brother" by his sisters and brothers. Later his nieces and nephews would call him "Brother". Apparently, there were two sides to him.

I (Bobbie Kruse- a great niece) will describe my recollections. Big Brother stood tall wore a cowboy hat at all times. He loved to "pick" on children and hold the ends of their hair, when the child would ask him to "stop pulling" their hair. He would reply "I am just holding it, your pulling it by moving". After he left Roopville he moved to Douglasville Ga. and had a farm and was a good carpenter. His mother ended up in a nursing home in Douglasville. Brother would visit daily always with Bananas in hand to share with his Mother, and other residents. He would visit those who had been forgotton about and left alone. He would assist those who could not hold a glass by helping the drink from a cup. He made everybody that was a resident feel like they were special and cared about if only by him. Two Scripture that reminds me of Brother is...

Philippians 2:4 ESV
Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.

1 Timothy 5:8 ESV
But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

He was the first of his silblings to pass away, after suffering from a stroke and being helpless in the same nursing home that he had taken care of so many others. After his death his sister Ollie M. Towns inherited his estate which she divided amongst his silblings.
