James E. Bettis, 87, Indianapolis, died after a sudden and brief illness on January 20, 2003 at St. Vincent Hospital. Mr. Bettis was an influential businessman and was very active in various civic organizations in Indianapolis. His career began in 1937, as a college student, when he entered the life insurance business. Mr. Bettis graduated from Butler University in 1940 and from Harvard School of Business in 1943. He was a veteran of WWII, having served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy.

In 1948, he became a general agent for Berkshire Life where he continued until he retired in 1980. Following a brief retirement, he graduated from American College of Bryn Mawr, PA with his MS degree in Financial Services. This began another career for him as he became an Investment Specialist for New England Securities in 1985 until his death.

Mr. Bettis was the past president of Indianapolis Life Underwriters Association, Indianapolis Chapter of Chartered Life Underwriters, & Indianapolis General Agents and Managers Association; past vice president of Indiana State Underwriters Association and Health Assn. of Indiana. He was a National Committeeman for nine years of Indianapolis Life Underwriters Assn and a member of the Indiana State Assn Legislative Committee. In addition, Mr. Bettis received the Hoosier Life Underwriter of the Year Award in 1967, awarded by the IN State Assn. of Life Underwriters. He was a two-time president of Berkshire Life General Agents Assn. and a member of their Executive Committee for 15 years. From 1968-71, he served as the National Director of Chartered Life Underwriters Society and as its VP from 1970-71.

Mr. Bettis was a past president of the Butler University Alumni Assn. and also served as Butlers National Fund Campaign Chairman and Past President of the Board of Governors. In October 1969, he received the Butler Medal which is the highest award bestowed upon an alum. Again in 2001, he and his wife, Martha Ann, were honored by Butler, receiving the Ovid Butler Award. Mr. Bettis was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity, having been named Indiana Sigma Chi of the Year in 1970. He was also past president of the Sigma Chi Foundation at Butler. A member of the Downtown Kiwanis, he received the Career Award in 1982 for exceptional contributions to his career. He was a member of Columbia Club, Skyline Club, Contemporary Club, International Wine and Food Society, LOrdre Mondial Des Gourmets Degustateurs, and Le Chaine des Rotisseurs.

He is survived by his wife, Martha Ann (Forsythe) Bettis; children, J. Timothy Bettis and Susan Ann Bettis; Grandchildren, Ashley Lockwood, T.J. Bettis, Kate Saunders; Great Grandchildren, Elizabeth & Anna Bettis.

Friends may greet the family on Thursday from 4-8 PM in Leppert & Hensley Mortuary, Nora Chapel. A celebration of his life will be held at 10 AM Friday in the mortuary. Interment will take place in Crownland Cemetery, Noblesville. Memorials may be made to the Kiwanis Foundation or Butler University.
