Fact 1:- Mr.& Mrs. Corneluis Knapp of Hazel Dell, an elderly German couple, were shot at their house while they were eating breakfast by Martin Sickles, who had once lived with them. He also shot William Shanklin near Kelso and burned his body and cabin. Martin Sickles was the last killer hanged in the county before the state took over jurisdiction over executions. Fact 2:- Corneluis and Amassey Knapp had no children.

Ann Knapp (Massey)

Was born in New York City NY She met and later married in 1865 Captain Cornelius Knapp Late of the 15th NY Cav. (They had no children)

Her husband was in the Lumber trade and later moved to Washington State in 1876 were he contuned to ship lumber back east. They both died in a house fire on Nov. 28th 1900 in Castle Rock WA. And were buried together in the Cowlitz Co. Cemetery. The C-1890s photo of Ann & Cornelius is courtesy of the Western WA. Civil War Round Table Soc. who were kind enough to let me copy it for find a grave.

Captain Cornelius Knapp

Served as Company Comander of Co. C 15th New York Vol. Cav. During the Civil War of 1861-65. He Married Miss Ann Massey in 1865 and was a business man in the lumber trade. (They had no children)

He came out to Washington State in 1876 again working in the lumber trade in the Castle Rock area.

They Both died Nov. 28th 1900 because of a house fire. He was 68 years of age. He was buried in the Cowlits Co. Cemetery with full military honors by the GAR C.S. Hamilton Post No.113 (From Powell WA.)

IN THE SUPERIOR COURT OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON, FOR COWLITZ COUNTY

Section VI
That said Amassay Knapp, deceased, left surviving her own brother, Levi B. Elliott, who is entitled to a 1/6 of said estate.

Also the three children of Simon Elliott, deceased, who was a brother of said Amassay Knapp, deceased, whose names are as follows: William Elliott, Charles B. Elliott, and Lucy Elliott Farr: who are each entitled to 1/16 of said Estate:

Also the five children of Ira Elliott, deceased, who was a brother of said Amassay Knapp, deceased, and whose names are as follows: Lucy (Elliott) Halloway, Nancy (Elliott) Landes, Charles E. Elliott, William E. Elliott and John I. Elliott, who are each entitled to a 1/30 of said Estate:
