OBITUARY :
MR. PLES J. SMITH, SR., 81, a resident of Manor Care Health Services, Chambersburg, PA and formerly of 545 Maple Street, Waynesboro, PA, died at 7:35 A.M., Tuesday, December 25, 2001 in the nursing home. He had been in failing health for the past year and critically ill for the past week.

Born March 13, 1920 in Pike Road, Alabama, he was the son of the late James A. and Annie (Lucas) Smith. He lived his early life in Alabama, moving to the Waynesboro area at age 16 with the CCC Camps.

Mr. Smith attended school in Alabama.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theater where he fought in the Battle of the Bulge.

He and his wife, the late Mrs. Loveus G. (Foster) Smith, were married September 4, 1937 in Hagerstown, MD. They lived at their Maple Street address since 1943. She died March 19, 2001. He entered the nursing home March 9, 2001.

Mr. Smith was employed as a welder for Fairchild Aircraft Manufacturing, Hagerstown, MD, until he retired on disability in 1975.

Mr. Smith was a member of National AARP.

He is survived by one daughter, Barbara A. Shank of Waynesboro, PA; one son, Ples J. Smith, Jr. of Hanover, PA; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Richard A. Smith of Springville, AL; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Wren L. Smith.

Services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Sunday, December 30, 2001 in Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 South Broad Street, Waynesboro, PA, with Rev. James T. Williams officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro, PA with military graveside honors conducted by Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post #1599, Chambersburg, PA.

It was his request to have no public viewing.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 P.M. Saturday evening in the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Easter Seal Society, 34 Roadside Avenue, Waynesboro, PA 17268.
