Military services for retired U.S. Navy Captain James H. Ashe III, 84, of Temple are 10 a.m. Saturday at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home in Temple with Dr. Ronnie Hood officiating.

Mr. Ashe died Tuesday, Jan. 4, in a local hospital.

He was born on March 18, 1926, to Claude H. and Margaret Ruth Berry Ashe in West Monroe, La. He grew up in Texas and Oklahoma. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean War. He retired as a captain in 1986. He worked for U.S. Customs in Laredo, Houston and Ketchikan, Alaska, until 1988. On June 1, 1967, he married Ella Fae Hammock Ready. They were longtime residents of Canton and moved to Temple in January 2010. He was a member of Canyon Creek Baptist Church and the Gideons.

Survivors include his wife; four sons, Jimmy Ashe of Waco, Paul Ashe of Pflugerville, Dr. Mike Ready of Temple and James H. Ashe of The Woodlands; four daughters, Clarie Verot of Canton, Marie Friberger of San Diego, Terri Rodriguez of Austin and Ruth Lilley of Houston; a brother, Dr. John Berry Ashe of Montana; and 15 grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army.

Visitation is 5-7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
