Martha Ruth Ashe, age 47, of Kerens, passed away Thursday, January 6, 2011 in her home. She was born September 6, 1963 in Houston, Texas to Irene Lewis Ashe and Claude Harmon Ashe.

Martha was a proud graduate of The University of Texas at Austin with a degree in journalism. Soon after graduating, she began working at the Corsicana Daily Sun as a reporter covering the education beat. Martha worked at the Daily Sun from about 1987 until 1994, was known for her fearlessness, and was only 26 years old when she was promoted to the position of editor. Her friends and coworkers knew her as bright, eager, and funny and confidant in her ability to cover the "tough stories".

After leaving the Daily Sun, she went on to work in Alexandria, LA, and at the Waco Tribune-Herald as a reporter.

Martha is survived by her mother, Irene Ashe; brother, James Ashe and wife Carolyn of Vienna, VA; sister, Barbara Wooster and husband Jerry of Baytown, TX; partner, Wally Palma of Kerens; nephews, Cameron Kolaja of Houston, TX, Colton Kolaja of Austin, TX, and James Ashe and William Ashe of Vienna, VA.

A visitation with the family will be held on Sunday, January 9, 2011 from 5:00 – 7:00 PM at Corley Funeral Home. Services will be at 2:00 PM on Monday, January, 10, 2011 at Corley Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Mike Alexander officiating. Burial will follow at Eureka Cemetery.
